Workers Compensation Funds
A number of states operate workmen’s compensation funds, which either act as monoplies or compete with private insurers to provide employers with coverages required by state law. Workmen’s compensation insurance covers employees’ loss of income and medical expenses because of work-related injuries. A few states operate disability funds which protect against employee losses caused by off-the-job accidents and injuries.
The Veterans Administration administers the voluntary life insurance plan known as NSLI or National Service Life Insurance. This plan made low-cost life insurance available to members of the military services during World War II. While new NSLI contracts are no longer available, the Veterans Administration does offer group insurance which is underwritten primarily by private insurers through SGLI or SEG LI
