Illinois extends open enrollment deadline for health care plans starting Jan. 1

8+ min ago (333+ words) Officials at Get Covered Illinois, the new state-run marketplace for insurance sold under the Affordable Care Act, announced Tuesday they have extended the open enrollment deadline to Dec. 31 for coverage that begins Jan. 1, 2026. Officials said the extension is intended to give people more time to receive help choosing a plan for the upcoming year as changes in federal policy are about to take effect. Free enrollment support is available from the Get Covered Illinois customer assistance center or by calling 1-866-311-1119 (TTY 711). Many consumers can expect to see significant increases in the cost of their plans as enhanced federal subsidies are set to expire at the end of the year. Those enhanced subsidies were enacted in 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Congress so far has not been able to agree on a plan to extend them beyond the end of this year....

ACA Subsidy Extension Vote Raises Uncertainty for Enrollees as Open Enrollment Nears End | AJMC

ACA Subsidy Extension Vote Raises Uncertainty for Enrollees as Open Enrollment Nears End | AJMC1+ hour, 13+ min ago (505+ words) Democrats move to extend ACA subsidies as enrollment closes, leaving consumers uncertain about premiums, coverage, and alternative health options. Emergency departments, hospitals, and community providers may experience increased uncompensated care burdens. People predicted to forego insurance are likely to turn to safety-net hospitals or rural facilities that are already operating with narrow margins.4 These hospitals would then be forced to scale back services, thus further limiting access to underserved communities.4 Aside from going uninsured, Light also predicts many people will turn to their employers to subsidize their loss of coverage. But employers may also see an increase in renewals, leading industries and groups to seek alternative benefit packages for employees in a competitive labor market.5 "Providers have effectively become subprime lenders, shouldering much of the risk for care before deductibles are met," Light explained in a written interview with AJMC....

Colorado hospitals have the profits to help more patients financially (Editorial)

Colorado hospitals have the profits to help more patients financially (Editorial)1+ hour, 56+ min ago (362+ words) Coloradans are getting crushed between hospital profits, insurance company profits and rising uncompensated care. These three insatiable drains on our health care system have broken medicine and made the cost of care for middle-class Americans who aren't on Medicaid or Medicare unbearable. Not all of the responsibility for this failed system falls on hospitals, but Colorado's non-profit health care providers are uniquely positioned to be able to help during this difficult time if they embrace the charitable nature of their business. UCHealth " a network of non-profit hospitals and clinics across the state affiliated with the University of Colorado " reported a $1.2 billion profit. HCA Health One, the state's only for-profit hospital network, reported $616.8 million in profit, and CommonSpirit Health reported $22.2 million. Most hospitals already write off a huge amount of uncompensated care, and that charitable gift to the poor who are…...

North Dakota ag producers could ‘walk away’ from health insurance, Farmers Union warns

North Dakota ag producers could ‘walk away’ from health insurance, Farmers Union warns2+ hour, 36+ min ago (598+ words) BISMARCK, N.D. (North Dakota Monitor) " Seven in 10 North Dakota Farmers Union agriculture producers will be affected by Affordable Care Act subsidies that expire at the end of the year, an official with the organization warned members this month. Lance Boyer, sales director of financial products for the North Dakota Farmers Union, said the enhanced tax credits that were part of the American Rescue Plan Act approved in 2021 brought down health insurance premiums for members. After the tax credits took effect, the North Dakota Farmers Union saw people who had previously been uninsured buy health insurance policies, he said. With the subsidies set to expire unless Congress votes to extend them, Boyer said federal lawmakers haven't focused enough on the self-employed farmers who will find it difficult to pay for increased health insurance premiums. "The bulk of the people that are going…...

Will the end of enhanced ACA subsidies mean the beginning of a health insurance crisis? | Managed Healthcare Executive

Will the end of enhanced ACA subsidies mean the beginning of a health insurance crisis? | Managed Healthcare Executive4+ hour, 2+ min ago (896+ words) Enrollment in Affordable Care Act health plans has soared because of enhanced subsidies enacted during the COVID-19 public health emergency. Democrats (and perhaps some moderate Republicans) want them continued. Republicans say they have better ideas about how to keep Americans in the individual market covered, including health savings accounts and association health plans. Despite multiple proposals floated in Congress on how to address the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA), it appears that millions of Americans will see their health insurance premiums soar in 2026. "I don't think there are any rabbits coming out of a hat at this point," Katherine Hempstead, Ph.D., a senior policy officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, said in an interview with MHE. Democrats support the continuation of the enhanced subsidies, but so do a small group of Republicans. One of them, Rep. Kevin Kiley, a…...
